Cold Wound Springs

Cold coiled springs are produced using fully heat-treated metal material that is stress-relieved to improve performance under pressure. Cold wound springs can be created with various end-configurations and styles, from extension and compression springs to torsion springs and others.

MW Industries facilities generally cold coil springs made from Chrome Silicon or oil tempered wire materials with spring diameters up to .75"; however, non-standard sizes and specialty materials like Stainless Steel and Inconel are available for custom projects.

Overview

Unlike hot wound springs which are heated to approximately 1700 degrees to increase pliability and then formed into the desired shape, cold coiled springs are generally produced using metal that was heat-treated prior to coiling, wound cold, and then stress-relieved through additional processes. Other materials may be heat-treated after cold coiling, some examples being Stainless Steel and Inconel.

Cold coiled springs are used more often in smaller applications where coiling wire or bar stock is less difficult; however, MW specializes in producing larger diameter cold coiled springs up to and including .750" (18.75mm).
