Prototyping & Rapid Prototyping

Prototyping & Rapid Prototyping Overview

Prototyping is available for custom parts in all the product categories we support, including springs, fasteners, bellows, couplings, and other precision metal components. Due to the expedited timelines associated with the rapid prototyping process, MW Components only offers rapid prototyping on select components produced using materials we know are readily available to meet your time constraints. Rapid prototypes are typically available in 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the type of part, the complexity of the geometry, and the material selected.

To inquire about the specifics of either program (standard prototyping or rapid prototyping) or to find out which program is right for you, ask an MW expert.

Specialty Prototyping Services

  • Rapid prototyping is the process of quickly creating a prototype through non-typical means, many times with a combination of 3D printing and coordinating software. MW Components offers rapid prototyping for select components, including springs, machined springs, wire forms, couplings, and u-joints in as little as one week.

Rapid Prototyping for Coiled Springs & Wire Forms

In addition to standard prototyping for springs, fasteners, and other metal components, MW Components offers rapid prototyping for certain components including coiled springs and wire forms. MW Components' Schiller Park location offers a rapid prototyping service specially designed for engineers looking for a rapid evaluation of design samples. Prototypes of compression, extension, torsion springs, and wire forms typically ship in 1-2 weeks (0.020’ -0.080” wire diameter) or 3-4 weeks (0.080” – 0.157” wire diameter) for a range of carbon and stainless steel materials. This rapid prototyping program allows engineers to quickly determine if a coiled spring or wire form meets the intended performance criteria before placing larger orders.

Rapid Prototyping for Machined Springs, U-Joints, and Couplings

MW Components also offers rapid prototyping for machined springs, u-joints, and couplings. Machined springs are components that are specially designed and manufactured to have spring properties. Many machined springs offer precise performance and can be used as alternatives to traditional compression, extension, torsion, or lateral bending springs. Most prototypes take 2-3 weeks to produce.
